A thing I come back to with the horror movies I love is the coziness that exists before everything goes to hell. It’s 8:30 in the morning so let’s settle in for a nice cozy day together. This is a movie about a person who is living my ideal life (a radio DJ who lives in a lighthouse). Please ignore the revenants. They are definitely not what this movie is about.

Last year I asked everyone who attended to make movie recommendations for things to watch this year. Only 2 movies had more than 1 suggestion & the other 1 was because Maia voted for KPop Demon Hunters twice. I think that’s a pretty smart play on her part to be honest. I hope she figures out a way to cheat in elections when she’s old enough to vote. Anyway… Yojimbo. Look, I’ve never seen this fuckin’ thing. Don’t really know what to say. I woulda probably picked a Godzilla here or the movie where Adrien Brody is teaching himself ventriloquism. His dad builds model boats as a hobby cuz he likes getting high off of the model glue. It’s a good movie. Maybe I’ll pick it next year. Definitely not gonna let you guys pick. Do your own movie marathons why don’tcha?

I remember where I was the first time I saw this (well part of this). It was on tv at the house where my fake band Satan’s Beer Vomit was invented. Usually we’d drink beer, watch the early aughts relaunch of Headbangers Ball & joke about how bad all the music was. For whatever reason the part of this movie with a claymation burger singing Van Halen ended up on the tv that night & I had no clue what could possibly be going on. Shortly after this I tracked down a copy on VHS at Goodwill & watched it A TON. I think of this as an early form of anti-comedy really. A lot of the humor is about a teen repeatedly failing to commit suicide. And it’s the 80s so there’s questionable depictions of minorities… but not quite in the way you’d expect for the time. There’s also an infinitely more interesting movie going on in the background of this 1 (a movie about Badger. What on earth is that little boy doing?).

1 of the Family Videos in town was getting rid of their VHS section so me & Todd the human went to check it out. I think it was 10 or 12 movies for $1. I picked this 1 up on a whim & for a while it became a movie I’d show to people when they came over. Fred G Sullivan made a movie that nobody cared about. He wanted to make another movie, but that’s hard when you have other obligations & nobody cares about your art. So he made a movie about how hard it is to make a movie when you have other obligations & nobody cares about your art. This year is the 14th year that I’ve been working on The Travis Wayne Hurt Christmas Special. Almost everyone who comes through here today has contributed to this project at some point. I don’t wanna speak for everyone but I feel like a lot of us have the same compulsion that Fred G Sullivan had. We have to make something & due to circumstance these things will inevitably be about the people we are making our things with. And if the thing you’re working on isn’t working out you can always throw in a russian speaking bear as a deus ex machina. I still have the VHS I got at Family Video, but today we’re gonna watch the version I downloaded from FGS’s kid’s vimeo account.

I went to stay with my grandma for a week as a child & during that week I collected a bunch of trading cards from this movie & Gremlins 2: The New Batch. I loved my Wylie Burp card so much that I would carry it around in my wallet. (Why did I have a wallet as a kid? Dunno. My theory there is that I could keep the money I got for bdays/xmas/etc in there & my mom could steal it, which did happen multiple times). My dad couldn’t believe that I was carrying this trading card around with me all the time. He was like SOMEDAY SOMEONE IS GONNA OFFER YOU A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THAT CARD BUT THEN SEE HOW BEAT TO HELL IT IS & SAY NEVERMIND. Well joke’s on you dad. I recently bought the entire set of these cards off ebay for $22.38 including shipping. I will now pass them around if you’d like to look at them.

AGING. That’s a thing that is gonna come up during these movie marathons. We’re here to celebrate me getting 1 year older afterall. Bubba Ho-Tep takes a very serious look at what it’s like to try to stay relevant in a world that is passing you by. It’s also about Elvis and JFK trying to kill a cowboy mummy so it’s a very TWH coded look at what it’s like to try to stay relevant in a world that is passing you by.

At some point during the pandemic my bud Julie Bumpus asked what my top 10 movies were & I spent a long time figuring that out. Once I figured it out I said THESE ARE THE 10 & I NEVER HAVE TO ADJUST THAT AGAIN. This is the 2nd year of the TWH International Film Festival & I’d like to show one of those 10 movies every year (if I live that long). So here is one of my top 10 favorite movies ever. It shouldn’t really surprise anyone but almost all of the movies on this top 10 list are gonna be horror movies. When I think about the best horror movie of the 90s it kinda comes down to this and Scream. This wins out through personal preference I suppose. I learned that at this point in his career Josh Hartnett was cutting his own hair & as someone who has spent $0 lifetime on haircuts I strongly identify with that. Maybe that’s what gives this the edge over Scream. Anyway The Faculty is officially the #1 greatest movie of the 90s. Thanks for watching.

Last year about a week before the 1st TWH International Film Festival I wanted to remind people that the day was approaching so I asked everyone if they had any guesses about which movies I might’ve picked. Kenneth guessed this movie. Earlier that morning I had actually added this as the 1st movie I was considering for year 2. When he made the guess I locked it in. When I was a kid my dad had me watch comedy routines from Gallagher and Andy Kaufman whenever they’d show up on cable. They were always the 2 he’d specifically point out as being the funniest. It would really be impossible to say these 2 didn’t have a big influence on what I think is funny to this day. During college I really started trying to learn more about Andy Kaufman. I was fascinated by this weirdo. Read a bunch of books (the 1st of which I found at Dollar Tree). Tried to track down his movie appearances (Had to buy a used copy of this on ebay cuz the library didn’t even have it. I still haven’t seen In Got We Trust). Andy Kaufman got to be the star of 1 movie! It got nominated for an Oscar! It was a disaster! Here it is!

A lot of horror movies like this come down to the twist - Who is the murderer & why are they doing this? I always think this movie is fascinating because that twist happens, but doesn’t matter. The real twist is about something else - Who is this victim & how are they messing up the murderer’s plan so bad? The scene that really locks this in as an all timer for me is when the family is trying to figure out which person needs to run to a car to try to go get help. Their discussion falls apart entirely because of their existing family dynamics. They can’t help but pick at each other even when they’re all dying. It’s so funny when Amy Seimetz yells YOU GUYS NEVER GIVE ME ANY CREDIT FOR ANYTHING. As a little side note here, this is 1 of the movies that completely turned me off of movie trailers. The song that gets repeated over and over in the movie is Looking For The Magic by Dwight Twilley Band. In the trailer they lead you to believe that the song is going to be Perfect Day by Lou Reed. Because of this I had completely different expectations about what the vibe of this movie was gonna be going in. It really kept me from connecting with the movie on its own level on my first viewing. I go see movies at least once a week & even have a system in place to skip the trailers. I leave my house when the movie is scheduled to start & keep my headphones on until after the coke commercial that plays before Nicole Kidman makes you pledge allegiance to the movies. Get outta here, movie trailers. Lemme try to figure these things out on my own.

My favorite movie genre is A CRAZY PERSON TRIES TO MAKE THE REST OF THE WORLD THINK A SANE PERSON IS THE CRAZY PERSON (Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Single White Female, etc.). This is 1 of those & it’s the 1 where Beyonce throws Ali Larter through a ceiling. The perfect kind of movie to watch at 3:30 in the morning.

A big theme in my life (especially my early life) is AGE INAPPROPRIATE EXPERIENCES. A fun version (won’t get too deep into the unfun versions here) of that is Tommy! A movie my dad definitely should not have had me watch whenever it would play on cable. He loved the tunes so much it really didn’t register that we were watching a child witness a murder, get molested, and do drugs with a sex worker on TNT or wherever this was showing. He’s right too. You get to hear Tina Turner really tear it up on The Acid Queen. Plus who cares if I was seeing this stuff happen? I’d already seen Behind The Green Door and crashed a mini van before ever being exposed to Tommy.

This is the only movie I ever saw in a theater on christmas. Me, Will from Satan’s Beer Vomit, and his cousin Charlie drank a few cans of Busch beer in the parkinglot of the Savoy 16 & headed in. In the opening scene a facehugger gets a child. The packed theater erupted in cheers & laughter. It was an incredible communal experience to be in a room full of the type of people who needed to go sit in the dark with other weirdos after spending an entire stressful day with their families. The type of people who would be watching this as a way to close out a 24 hour movie marathon.
